DeployLog manual

09Analytics

Every project has its own Analytics page, reached from that project's page. The numbers below cover that project only.

What counts as a view

A view is one recorded arrival at a published entry, through the public changelog page or the embedded widget. The public page is covered in chapter 03 and the widget in chapter 04. Those two surfaces are the only things that report views.

The dashboard does not count itself. Opening your own entries in the dashboard records nothing; the dashboard reads view data, it never writes it.

Only views of published entries are recorded. A view reported for a draft, or for an entry that does not exist, is filtered out before anything is stored, and nothing is counted.

DeployLog never counts email opens. An open, the tracked-pixel metric your email tool reports, has no equivalent here. The emails DeployLog sends for you and the readers that pull your feed report nothing here.

What a view record holds

Four things, and nothing else:

  • which entry the view belongs to
  • the source: widget or public page
  • an optional viewer fingerprint
  • the time the view arrived

No name, no email address, no account, no IP address is stored with a view. A view that arrives without a fingerprint is stored anyway: it counts toward Total views, but not toward Unique viewers.

The three numbers every plan sees

Analytics is not paid-only. Every plan gets the Analytics page, the "Last 30 days" label, and three headline numbers. Chapter 12 covers plans and billing.

Number What it counts
Total views Every view recorded in the window.
Unique viewers Distinct viewer fingerprints in the window.
Entries viewed Entries with at least one view in the window.

A unique viewer is one distinct fingerprint inside the 30-day window: a short token generated in the reader's browser and sent along with the view. It does not identify a person. A reader who opens ten entries counts once for the whole project.

Entries viewed is not your entry count. Ten published entries with views on two of them reads 2.

The range is fixed at the last 30 days. There is no date picker, no export, and no longer history on any plan; views older than the window are never fetched, so they appear in none of these numbers.

What Pro adds

On Pro, three sections appear below the headline numbers: Views by source, Daily trend, and Top entries. On Free those three are replaced by an upgrade prompt titled "Unlock detailed analytics", and the three headline numbers stay exactly as they are.

Views by source

The source is where a view came from. Four tiles: Widget, Public page, Email, API.

Only widget views and public page views can be recorded today, so the Email and API tiles sit at zero and stay there. A view that arrives without a stated source is filed under Widget.

Daily trend

Exactly 30 points, one per UTC day, ending today. A day with no views is a zero, not a gap.

The line is scaled to its own tallest day and carries no axis labels and no numbers. Read the shape, not the height; for totals, use the headline numbers.

Top entries

Most viewed first, counts on the right. At most 20 rows are drawn, so entry 21 and beyond are not shown.

An entry with zero views in the window never appears in the list. When the project has no views at all in the window, the section reads "No views yet."
